Industrial hydrated lime is produced by hydration of quick lime with some excess of water (to balance excess heat), in which calcium hydroxide crystals grow in expense of the fine CaO powder, resulting in volume increase. The expansion that takes place during hydration is responsible for the “open” structure of HL clusters with many gaps and voids. The lime waste, on the other hand, is formed in aqueous slurry during acetylene production and, then, filter-pressed (and in the present case also dried and crushed).
